Assurance and verification are two names for the same service: an independent, evidence-based check of your reported greenhouse gas emissions that ends in a formal conclusion. We provide limited or reasonable assurance over Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions to ISO 14064-3, with a free readiness review before the formal work begins.
Your finance team, auditors and investors will usually talk about assurance. ISO standards and CDP usually talk about verification. ISO 14064-3, the international standard for checking a GHG statement, uses both: the engagement is a verification, and its result is expressed as a level of assurance.
So if a board paper, tender or investor questionnaire asks for “independent assurance of your carbon emissions”, an ISO 14064-3 verification statement is what we deliver.

Limited or reasonable assurance: which do you need?
ISO 14064-3 defines two levels of assurance. Both are legitimate. The right choice depends on your reporting obligations, what your stakeholders expect and the level of scrutiny your data will face.
Limited assurance
The standard for most voluntary reporting, CDP submissions, SECR figures and ESG disclosures. It uses enquiry, analytical procedures and targeted data testing, and results in a negative-form conclusion: “nothing has come to our attention that causes us to believe the GHG statement is materially misstated.”
Proportionate, cost-effective and widely accepted.
Reasonable assurance
A higher level of confidence for mandatory disclosures and data that will face detailed external scrutiny. It involves extensive testing back to source records and results in a positive-form conclusion: “In our opinion, the GHG statement is fairly stated in all material respects.”
It typically takes 50–100% more audit time than limited assurance. It is a high level of assurance, not absolute assurance.
Standards compared
ISO 14064-3 and ISAE 3410: two routes to GHG assurance.
Large listed groups often receive GHG assurance from their financial auditor under ISAE 3410, the accountancy profession’s standard for assurance on greenhouse gas statements. Specialist verifiers work to ISO 14064-3. CDP lists both among its accepted verification standards.

Why you report
GHG assurance that fits the reason you report.
Annual reports and SECR
Assurance over the energy and emissions figures directors sign off in the annual report. SECR does not require it, but it gives the board an audit trail. Who carries the risk
CDP disclosure
Verification is a condition of reaching CDP’s Leadership band. We complete CDP’s verification letter for your response. CDP verification and assurance
Independently assured figures for carbon reduction plans, supplier questionnaires and customer reporting requirements.
Investors and lenders
Assured emissions data for ESG due diligence, sustainability-linked finance and investor questionnaires.
Targets and progress
Assurance over base-year and current-year inventories, so progress against your reduction targets can be relied on.
What you receive
An assurance statement you can publish, and findings you can use.
At the end of the engagement you receive a signed verification statement for publication or submission, and a findings report to help you improve next year.
✓The organisation, reporting period and organisational boundary
✓The reporting criteria: the GHG Protocol or ISO 14064-1
✓The emissions covered, by scope and Scope 3 category
✓The level of assurance and the materiality threshold
We agree your reporting period, boundaries, the emissions to be covered, the assurance level and your deadline, then confirm the fee.

Your free readiness review
We review the information you already have, from part-year or last year’s data, months before your deadline. Your team gets private, documented feedback to act on at its own pace.

Formal assurance
We verify the complete reporting period, an independent reviewer checks our work, and you receive your statement and findings report.
Yes, in practice. Verification is the term ISO 14064-3 and CDP use; assurance is the term most often used in annual reports and by investors and auditors. Both describe an independent, evidence-based conclusion on your reported greenhouse gas emissions, given at a limited or reasonable level of assurance.
Which level of assurance do most organisations choose?
Most start with limited assurance, which is appropriate for most voluntary reporting, SECR figures and CDP submissions. Reasonable assurance involves considerably more testing; in our experience it typically takes 50 to 100 per cent more audit time. We will tell you if your obligations, customers or board call for more.
Do you provide ISAE 3410 assurance?
No. We provide assurance to ISO 14064-3, the ISO standard for verifying GHG statements. ISAE 3410 is the accountancy profession’s standard and is usually provided by accountancy firms. CDP accepts both. If a requirement specifically names ISAE 3410, we will tell you at the outset.
Can you provide assurance over the SECR figures in our annual report?
Yes. SECR does not require assurance, but independent assurance of the energy and emissions figures gives the directors who sign the report a clear audit trail and supports investor due diligence.
Is your assurance accepted for CDP?
Yes. ISO 14064-3 is one of CDP’s accepted verification standards, and our verification statements have been accepted in previous CDP disclosures. We also complete CDP’s verification letter for your response.
Do I need a UKAS-accredited assurance provider?
Usually not for voluntary corporate reporting. UKAS accreditation is a legal requirement mainly for regulated schemes such as the UK Emissions Trading Scheme and CORSIA, which we do not verify. If the scheme or customer you report to requires an accredited body, we will tell you and point you to the right route.
Do you provide assurance over other ESG data?
Our assurance covers greenhouse gas emissions. Other ESG metrics, carbon-neutrality claims and avoided emissions need separate consideration, and we will tell you plainly when a different engagement or provider is the better fit.
How much does carbon assurance cost?
We quote a fee for the agreed scope, not an hourly rate. It depends on the scopes and categories covered, the number of sites, entities and countries, the complexity of the inventory, the level of assurance and the timetable. The readiness review is free and is not added to the fee. Our online fee estimate gives you an initial figure.
You will talk to a verifier, not a salesperson. Tell us why you report, which emissions you need assured and when you need the statement. You do not need a finished inventory. If you go ahead, the person you speak to leads your engagement.
